There are so many things that vehicle owners value when choosing the perfect car. Some go for appearance, others for speed, and still others for gas mileage, but the most economical car owner will probably prize longevity. A long life for your vehicle can save you a lot of money over the years. And if you love your car, you'll probably want to be able to keep it for as long as possible.

A few factors that contribute to the longevity of a vehicle are ones that the owner has control over, like regular oil changes, transmission maintenance, and spark plug changes. But other factors can often depend on the model and make of the vehicle. Certainly, many automakers pride themselves in building vehicles that are built to last. Some, like Volvo and Mercedes-Benz, even reward responsible vehicle owners with "high mileage club" badges for vehicles that have hit milestones ranging from 250,000 miles all the way up to 1 million miles. 1983 Lincoln Town Car

Chet Belisle of Kansas bought his Lincoln Town Car in 1983 and has since put 1.3 million miles on it. His secret was buying parts with lifetime warranties so he could affordably keep up with repairs and replacements. The engine has been rebuilt along with the transmission, and a regular schedule of maintenance keeps this car on the road.

1981 Mercedes 240D

When Georgia's Paul Harman bought his Mercedes, it had 40,000 miles on it, and now, it's in the million-mile club. It has received a bit of TLC along the way. At 500,000 miles, Harman celebrated by replacing the rubber seals on the car's body, restoring the driver's seat, and repainting the car. Who can blame him? I'm sure we'd all like to keep a Mercedes in top shape forever.

2006 Honda Civic

Paul Habib hit 750,000 miles within five years of owning his Honda Civic, and a few years later, the Indiana man reached the one-million-mile mark and just kept driving. As with many million-mile cars, the engine needed to be replaced around the halfway point. Habib, a pharmacy delivery driver, has shared the story of what his Civic has been through in Honda forums.

1964 Porsche 356C

Guy Newmark of California was given his Porsche as a graduation gift in the 1960s. What a lucky guy! He took good care of that car, and it's still on the road 50 years later. It was taken in for maintenance every 3,000 miles, and Newmark says he still drives it every day.

1989 Saab 900 SPG

Many people mourned Saab's exit from the auto world, and part of the reason for that is because these are such high-quality vehicles. Peter Gilbert of Wisconsin drove his Saab for an incredible 1,001,385 miles before letting it retire and donating it to the Wisconsin Auto Museum. With so few of these models left and only 900 that were available in America, this impressive car really is an artifact.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE

This dignified vehicle was owned by George and Luzstella Koschel of California. Their Benz hit 1.1 million miles in 2005. The automaker was so impressed that they bought the car from them in order to install it in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

2006 Chevy Silverado 3500

Hugh and Tammy Pennington certainly own a reliable Silverado. It carried the Michigan couple for 1.22 million miles, a goal that stemmed from Tammy's work pulling travel trailers for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The couple share no great secrets to the truck's long life and said they simply changed the oil every 5,000 miles and gave the truck frequent washes.

1976 Mercedes 240D

We've featured cars that reached 1 million miles, but can you believe a car can reach 2 million miles? Taxi driver Gregorios Sachinidis of Greece drove his Mercedes for 2.85 million miles, and the company acknowledged it as the longest-running car made by their brand. They traded Sachinidis a new model so they could put his on display in their museum.

1996 Dodge 2500 Pickup

Dan Edelman put a lot of time and love into his Dodge pickup. The New York delivery driver built the transmission himself for longevity, and he's gotten 600,000 miles on it. He's also replaced other parts as needed on his way to the million milestone.

1966 Volvo P1800

We've saved the most astounding for last. Irv Gordon reached the million-mile mark with his Volvo in 1987. And this car has now reached – wait for it – 3 million miles! Gordon, a retired teacher from New York, had to be meticulous to keep the car running so long, providing frequent oil changes, a revitalized carburetor, and a new clutch. The car is carefully winterized every year to reduce damage, and Gordon claims another secret to his success is to drive safely and sensibly.
